rifles for $200 each. bay area congresswoman jackie spear actually handed out the cash. she helped fund the buyback with some of her own campaign funds. she says no taxpayer money was used. as you might recall, she's a survivor of a shooting in jonestown back in 1978 that wounded her and killed her then-boss, congressman leo ryan. spear is pushing for congress to pass new gun control measures. >> we are a gun violence society. of the 23 wealthiest countries in the world, the united states is responsible for 80% of the gun deaths. >> it was my goth's. she gave it to -- grandmother's. she gave it to my father. my father passed away. i cleaned his house. i have a little kid, and i don't want it in the house. >> reporter: spear says gun control will do little to get the guns already out there off the streets. that's why she says buybacks are so important. the buyback was completely anonymous. the sheriff's department is cataloging the guns trying to figure out if any were used in crimes or were stolen. organizers say they handed out a total of $63,500 in cash today. in san mateo, nbc bay ar
